5 Advantages of Self-Pay Therapy in Orlando

Written by Jennifer Sierra, LMHC  |  Holistic Mental Health Counseling  |  Lake Nona & Orlando, FL

At Holistic Mental Health Counseling, I work with adults in Orlando, Lake Nona, and across Central Florida who want therapy that actually fits their life — not just whatever their insurance will approve. One of the most common questions I get is about self-pay therapy: Is it worth it? What are the real benefits? Here’s what I tell my clients.

1. You Choose the Therapist — Not Your Insurance Company

The biggest advantage of self-pay therapy in Orlando is simple: you pick who you work with. When you go through insurance, you’re limited to whoever is in-network. That list may be short, outdated, or full of providers who aren’t taking new clients. Self-pay removes that barrier entirely.

This matters because the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of outcomes. You deserve to work with someone who’s actually a good fit for you — not just whoever your plan allows. At Holistic Mental Health Counseling, I take the time to make sure we’re the right match before we even begin.

2. More Flexibility in How We Work Together

Self-pay therapy gives us room to tailor your treatment in ways that insurance typically won’t allow. Want to meet twice a week during a hard season? Prefer longer sessions? Interested in weaving in equine-assisted work or other holistic approaches alongside traditional therapy? We can do that — without filing for prior authorization or justifying it to a third party.

As a holistic therapist in Orlando, my approach looks at you as a whole person —your mind, body and spirit. Self-pay makes it easier to honor that.

3. Faster Access to Care

If you’ve ever tried to find an in-network therapist in the Orlando area, you know the drill — long wait lists, unreturned calls, or providers who technically accept your insurance but aren’t actually available. Self-pay sidesteps most of that. You reach out, we connect, and we get started.

When you’re ready to work on your mental health, waiting weeks (or months) for an opening isn’t just frustrating — it can set you back. Your first visit with me can happen quickly, without the red tape.

4. More Privacy in Your Care

When you use insurance, your therapist is required to submit a diagnosis and, in some cases, treatment notes to your insurance company. With self-pay, that information stays between us. No diagnosis required for billing. No treatment plans sent to a third party. For many of my clients in Lake Nona and across Central Florida, that privacy matters.

It’s worth knowing that this applies specifically to out-of-pocket payment — not out-of-network billing, which I’ll explain below.

5. Making It Work — Even If Full Out-of-Pocket Isn’t an Option

I get it — self-pay isn’t realistic for everyone. Here are a few options that can help make therapy more accessible:

Out-of-network benefits: If your insurance plan includes out-of-network coverage, you may be able to see me and get partially reimbursed. I can provide a superbill (a detailed receipt) that you submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Rates vary by plan, so it’s worth a quick call to your insurance company to ask. This option does still require a diagnosis, so it’s more private than in-network — but not quite the same as fully out-of-pocket.

HSA/FSA accounts: Therapy is typically a qualified medical expense, which means you can often use your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account to cover sessions. Check with your plan provider to confirm. Visit the Rates & Fees page for current session investment details.

Whatever path makes sense for you, the most important thing is that you get the support you need. I’m happy to talk through options during a free consultation call.
